THE AUTHOR:
Eduardo CALVO SANS (1948) obtained his Physics degreee (Exact Sciences Faculty, UBA,
1974) in the middle of the political vertigo of the moment. The argentinian military coup of 1976 ended his
career as scientific investigador; he didn't leave the country, however, as most of his classmates, and
remaind in hibernation within the local industry. In 1990 he began his career as scientific
journalist, specialized in the environmental problematics. Trips and interviews led him to augur big
near future transformations, impelling him towards youth artistic dreams, now possible thanks to
computers.

dreaming about a new civilization?

To imagine the XXI Century like a continuation of the last times is a mistake. From now on, the climatic change and the rising oil price will make the coming times very different. To make matters worse, religious regressions can contribute dramatically to the new reality, with elements that emerge from our deep animal nature.                                                                                  During the last two centuries, just an instant in human history, we have lived comfortably in the easy way: we have been burning oil, gas and coal as if they were infinite and HARMLESS. But, this drunkness of energy is about to become a hangover.                                                                                As a result of this bonanza, the humanity obtained in a century much more thaN in previous millenia: the life expectancy was multiplied, we could see "live" Neil Armstrong on the Moon and today we can even dream –through the stem cells- with something similar to immortality.                                   We are at the best time. But, it cannot last. We do not have power resources to give continuity to this LUCKY present.                                                                                                 The so denominated “alternative energies” will be enough only to think we are doing something. The atomic energy could have been a solution, but our human society - perhaps for good reasons- has decided to ban it and now we are no longer in time to turning it on to substitute oil.            We live in a cultural trap: it is impossible for us to imagine a worthy society without a permanent increase of its “gross product”.                                                                                                                                        The culture of oil took us to believe that permanent growth is unavoidable. But, if the unrestricted availability of energy becomes impossible and the planet overpopulation continues, it will be necessary to rethink things in different terms.                                         It is not a problem for the next century; it is for the day after tomorrow. Day by day the climatic disturbances becomes more serious and oil will never be almost free again.                                        Facing these facts, the challenge is to build a new culture, a civilization compatible with the new reality.                                                                                                                                          We should save all the good part that we have been able to construct, become a little less animals, to avoid those tragedies that seem unavoidable at first sight and so take advantage of the opportunity to discard the undesirable things of our present society.
